| PALOS VERDES, Calif. -- It took two-and-a-half quarters for Palos Verdes to turn a game between two unbeaten teams into a rout.
Senior attackman Jon Spangler registered a game-high eight points on four goals and four assists to lead Palos Verdes to a resounding 14-3 victory over Loyola-Los Angeles in a CIF-Southern Section non-league game Tuesday afternoon.
Senior goalie Alex Marin saved 13 shots, junior middie Nolan Semel scored four goals and senior attackman David Scott scored three times for the Sea Kings (10-0), who won their 10th straight. Junior attackman Sammy Romer added two points on a goal and an assist, as Palos Verdes demonstrated that it is the clear-cut favorite to represent Los Angeles at the first Los Angeles-Orange County championship game.
"We stepped it up as a team," Marin said. "We knew this was one of the biggest games, and we stepped up mentally and physically. We're going to the championship."
In a losing effort, junior attackman Corey Botwinick scored twice, senior middie Patrick Migliazzo scored once and senior attackman David Burke and senior middie Henry Paulin each dished one assist for Loyola (10-1), which had its 10-game winning streak snapped.
The game was tied, 1-1, at the end of the first quarter, and Palos Verdes led 5-2 at halftime. The Cubs scored once in the second half, on a man-up rip by Migliazzo that hit the net on the inside stick-side post with 7:41 left in the third. But Palos Verdes shut Loyola out from there as the Sea Kings continued to score.
"They we're ready to play, and our team wasn't," Cubs head coach Matt Lewis said. "We made too many mistakes, and they played a solid game all around. This says that we have a lot to work on. We got a good look on these guys and what they are doing, and we might see them again in the playoff's."
