WSL Game Tracker
Article created on: 05/01/2007
Senior attackman Jon Spangler scored two goals and added four assists to lead unbeaten Palos Verdes to a 10-3 victory over Loyola-Los Angeles in the first-ever CIF-Southern Section Los Angeles County championship game Tuesday.

Junior middie Nolan Semel scored four goals, junior attackman Sammy Romer added four points on a goal and three assists and senior attackman David Scott scored twice to help lead Palos Verdes (19-0) to its 19th straight win. Ryan Rheingold also scored once for Palos Verdes, which is one of two undefeated teams in CIF and the only unbeaten team in Southern California.

With the win, Palos Verdes advanced to the first-ever CIF-Southern Section championship game, which will be played Saturday night at 7 p.m., at the Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif. Palos Verdes will face the winner of Wednesday night's Orange County title game between No. 9 Foothill-OC and No. 24 El Toro.

On Tuesday, Palos Verdes broke open a close game with a six-goal, second-half run over the final 20 minutes. Palos Verdes led 3-1 at the end of the first quarter and 4-2 at halftime, and Loyola closed within 4-3 after Henry Paulin scored his only goal about three minutes into the second half. But it was all Palos Verdes from there.

"Second half, we basically made some adjustments to break the zone they were playing," Palos Verdes Coach Lane Jaffe said. "We started moving the ball and played with a sense of urgency."

In a losing effort, Paulin, Patrick Migliazzo and Rocky Serrandino all scored once for Loyola-LA, which finished the season 14-2.

Both Loyola's losses have been to Palos Verdes, which is one game away from a perfect season. Palos Verdes has the best record in California, but it has run up a lot of wins against a soft schedule. On Saturday night, Palos Verdes will get its first crack at a Top 25 team and its first chance to prove it belongs in those rankings.

"We've proven how good we are all season, going 19-0," Jaffe said. "We just play who we play. We don't look at the rankings. We are not a number, we're a team that has won 19 games."
