Mira Costa Recap
April 17, 2007
The Palos Verdes Sea Kings returned the favor today and hosted last years Bay League Champs, the Mira Costa Mustangs, in the second meeting of the year between these two teams. The competition is always keen between these two beach city rivals and this game was no exception.

For the first time this year, the opponent was first to score against Palos Verdes. The Sea Kings were over anxious to get things going and the initial Mustang lead held for several minutes before PV scored the tying goal. Midway through the first quarter it was still 1-1, and then Palos Verdes finally got into a rhythm and went on a scoring spree that took the score to 5-1 by the end of the quarter. PV goalie Alex Marin stopped 5 shots on goal during the period.

The second quarter saw the Sea Kings outscore the Mustangs 3-2. Although the defense was tough up the middle, the Mustangs made the most of their three scoring opportunities. At halftime the score was 8-3 in favor of Palos Verdes.

During the third quarter, the Sea Kings stepped up the level of play again using their speed advantage to score another six times from four different players compared to twice for the Mira Costa. A lot of credit goes to Nathan Kasai and Ryan Rheingold for their excellent win ratio on the face-offs that helped spark many of the scoring opportunities.

Throughout the game, the long-stick defenders, along with long stick middies Sean Skelton, Greg Kanaga and Peter Trellenberg, made the Mira Costa attack pay for their forays toward the crease with constant harassment that was often initiated well outside of the box area.

With the score standing at 14-5 at the beginning of the fourth quarter, Coach Lane Jaffe used his deep bench to add fresh legs to the playing field. The Sea Kings held Costa to two goals while adding a goal of their own as junior Sammy Romer fooled the Costa goalie on the same behind the back shot that Mustang, Eric Krum failed to convert earlier in the game. Alex Marin ended the day with 17 saves in a 15-7 victory for the Palos Verdes Sea Kings.

Palos Verdes had six players scoring with two more contributing assists. Leading the scoring with five goals was the hot Jon Spangler. David Scott, Nolan Semel, Ryan Rheingold and Sammy Romer added two goals apiece with Nick Ochi and Tim Yang tallying one goal each. Sammy Romer had three assists and Jon Spangler had two.
