| The second game of the Sea King 2008 lacrosse campaign was an exciting non-league contest against the 2007 Orange County Runners-Up, Corona Del Mar. In fact, it was the rematch that almost was. Palos Verdes’ opponent in last year’s championship game at the Home Depot Center was determined by a game between CDM and Foothill which Foothill won by a single goal. And of course we know the rest of the story, Foothill defeated PV by the same one goal margin. Fast forward to 2008, and we have apparently two fairly evenly matched teams with both mascots named the Sea Kings.
The first quarter went the way of the storyline with both Sea Kings squads scoring two goals and the PV version trying to get used to the soggy field. Quarter two was big for CDM as they took advantage of some fast break opportunities to score five goals to PV’s deuce and went ahead 7-4. After the break, the Palos Verdes defense stiffened a bit and the offense stormed back with three goals via a good possession advantage to make it 9-7 going into the final frame. PV kept pushing the issue in the fourth and got to 9-8 before CDM scored their final goal on another fast break.
Nathan Kasai dominated the face-offs as he went 11-14 for the night and really helped PV’s offensive forays.
Nolan Semel showed off his rifle shot which found it’s way into the back of the opponents net five times. Also scoring goals were Mike Macfarlane, Brandon Lim and Eric Trelenberg. Both Sammy Romer and Alex Richardson were credited with assists. New starting goalie Matt Schladen had eleven saves.
This was one of many “tough” games this year against quality opponents. The Palos Verdes schedule is noticeably more difficult in 2008 as the Sea Kings prepare for what they hope will be another deep run into the playoffs.
