| The Sea Kings (2-1) hosted rival Mira Costa (0-2) on Thursday for their first Bay League matchup of the 2008 season. Aided by the return of injured attackman Sammy Romer, PV opened the game with good ball movement around the box and was able to convert on four goals in the first quarter. The Mustangs responded by splitting the defense for two goals of their own but unfortunately for them, the PV defense tightened up and goalie Matt Schladen didn’t allow a goal the rest of the way.
The Sea Kings continued to do well on face-offs, complemented by the aggressive wing play, which translated into a formidable time of possession advantage.
The second quarter was all Palos Verdes with another four goals tallied. The scoring pace trailed off a bit after halftime with the final four goals being spread out in quarters three and four. Throughout, the defense remained focused on keeping the Mira Costa attack away from the crease through a combination of plugging open lanes and relentless ground ball pursuit. Time after time, the long-sticks of Bennett Smith and Zack Rogers stopped forays toward the net and turned possession back the other way.
Nolan Semel and Sammy Romer shared high scorer status with three goals apiece while Eric Trelenberg notched two. The remaining goals were credited to Alex Richardson, Brandon Lim, Dylan Cogan and Paul Monteverde. Richardson also had three assists.
